About this Course

This course is a continuation in the Writing & Rhetoric series for students who have a strong foundation in writing. It uses two books: 'Encomium & Vituperation' and 'Comparison'. In the first semester, students learn to craft essays praising a virtue (encomium) or blaming a vice (vituperation), focusing on skills like discerning main ideas, utilizing hyperboles, and incorporating detailed evidence. They also complete a research paper unit, learning seven steps to avoid plagiarism. In the second semester, students develop the art of comparison, analyzing and assessing two subjects in a single essay. This course is designed for rising 7th-8th graders, with 6th graders welcome but requiring additional support. It aims to prepare students for mastery in writing and oratory.
