About this Course

This online course is designed as an enjoyable and supportive space for young students who are new to writing. The course focuses on helping students find their voice, organize their ideas, and improve their writing skills through in-class writing exercises and discussions about writing traits. Brief grammar reviews, covering topics such as parts of speech and sentence types, are included to aid students in applying essential grammar skills. The course covers both fiction and non-fiction writing topics and helps students build up to writing complete, three-paragraph essays. Students will also have the opportunity to explore poetry through various types of poems, such as limericks, haikus, and formal verse rhyme scheme. Individual feedback is provided for each written assignment, and students will have the chance to create a final piece that showcases their writing accomplishments.

Parents are required to be involved in the first semester, assisting their young students as they acclimate to an academic course. By the second semester, students should be able to work independently during class time. It is recommended that this writing course be taken in conjunction with a TPS Elementary Humanities course to form a complete elementary language arts program. Students for whom English is not a first language should contact the school to discuss taking this course as part of the English as a Foreign Language program.
