About this Course

World Literature and Composition is a year-long, credit-bearing high school course (grades 9-12) taught by Beth Purcell on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM CST. This college preparatory English course satisfies high school language arts requirements in literature and composition, and is part of True North Academy’s Dual Degree Program. The course surveys ancient literary works that have influenced modern storytelling, with a focus on developing students' ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and discuss complex literary works, and to master essential writing skills. It covers various literary elements and devices, and encourages project-based learning and digital portfolio creation. Students will read and analyze seven classic works, including 'The Odyssey' and 'The Aeneid', from a Christian worldview while exploring diverse perspectives.

The course leverages technology to enhance learning, using word processing software for writing, online research databases for source evaluation, online platforms for peer collaboration, and multimedia presentations for interactive elements. It is ideal for upper-level high school students interested in ancient and world history, art, or music, and for those aspiring to prepare for higher education and explore past authors and works globally. An honors option is available.
