About this Course

"Wordsmiths at Work: Level C Composition" is a year-long online course designed for advanced writers in middle to high school (8th-9th grades, approved 7th graders). Taught by Beth Purcell, this course awards one year of high school composition credit. Students explore significant U.S. historical events while mastering standard writing structures, grammar, and advanced literary devices. The course integrates the Institute for Excellence in Writing units and culminates in a twelve-paragraph expanded essay and a professional digital portfolio.

In each class, students engage in reading and discussing source texts, implementing specific writing styles, and completing weekly composition assignments. Key focus areas include developing keyword outlines, analyzing texts, mastering paragraph structure, engaging in interactive learning experiences, and crafting compelling writing. By the end of the course, students gain confidence and a strong foundation in note-taking, writing from multiple sources, storytelling, creative composition, proofreading, vocabulary, and grammar.
