About this Course
This is a full-year online course that surveys U.S. history from the colonial period through the end of the twentieth century. The course aims to promote understanding of how U.S. history has either upheld or contradicted America's ideals of political equality, natural rights, and sovereignty of the people. It employs historical thinking skills and tools, and incorporates rich primary sources and material culture objects to foster a deeper appreciation for the complexities of history. The class is not lecture-based; instead, it operates as a modified "flipped classroom" where students are expected to read, watch films, and participate in discussion posts outside of class. Most class time is dedicated to content analysis, big question discussions, and collaborative, small-group learning activities.
The course is appropriate for high school students with a strong background in college-level reading and writing. For students seeking a more challenging academic experience, an Advanced Placement U.S. History course is available.
