About this Course
The course offers students the opportunity to create an icon of Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco using acrylic paint over the course of one spring semester. Each session begins with prayer and a presentation related to iconography or the saint, followed by painting work on the main icon and practice of various artistic skills. The skill-focused curriculum rotates every three years, with 2025 slated to focus on painting facial features.
By participating in this course, students will learn to mix and apply acrylic paint specifically for iconography, utilizing highlights and linework to render their subject. They will also develop understanding and ability in Byzantine lettering, color and tone management, and iconic line work.
