The Western Epic

This online course, titled "Exploring Epic Poetry in the Western Tradition," is designed to delve into the heart of epic poetry, an ancient storytelling form common to many civilizations. Students will examine the richness of the Western epic tradition, starting from its early origins in Ancient Greek civilization. The course material will cover Hesiod’s "Theogony," Homer’s "Iliad" and "Odyssey," Vergil’s "Aeneid," and Dante’s "The Divine Comedy." Through close reading and thoughtful discussion, students will engage with foundational literature, becoming familiar with major stories, figures, and images that have shaped the Western imagination. The course aims to equip students with new questions, understanding of their cultural history, and skills in close reading, writing, and critical thinking. Upon completion, high school students may earn 1 Literature credit.
