The Short Story

This online English literature course, designed for high school students aged 14-18, introduces key aspects of literary analysis while covering a broad range of classical short stories and essays. Students will gain insights into plot, character, and setting, and delve into the basic analysis of poetry. The course features works by renowned authors such as Kipling, Hawthorne, Twain, and Hemingway, and includes instruction on expository essay techniques. Students should dedicate approximately 45 minutes daily. Assessment involves participation, quizzes, plot diagrams for each story, collaborative discussion forums, reflections, and essays, fostering critical thinking and engagement with the texts.

The course, spanning one school year and worth 1 high school credit in English, Language Arts, or Literature, does not require any prerequisite knowledge. All readings are provided online at no additional cost. Students will need a USB headset microphone for class engagement.
