About this Course
TGC 5 is an advanced-level, discussion-based online course focused on the Great Conversation throughout the Middle Ages. Students ages 14 and up explore influential works from this period, such as those by Boethius, Dante, Chaucer, and Machiavelli, engaging with themes of history, philosophy, theology, and literature. The course encourages students to analyze these works in light of biblical truth, fostering a deeper understanding of the Great Conversation and its impact on society. Assignments include regular reading, writing papers (two per semester), and contributing to class discussions through discussion board posts.
The course, aimed at School of Rhetoric students, emphasizes critical thinking and the art of dialogue from a biblical perspective. While the focus is on medieval Europe during the fall of Rome to the death of Elizabeth I, the course also touches on early medieval mythology and the works of notable thinkers like Calvin. Students should expect to spend around 3-5 hours weekly on reading assignments, complemented by writing tasks.
