About this Course

The WTMA Summer Japanese Reading Club is a weekly online meeting place for students to practice their Japanese language skills and engage in reading and discussion over the summer break. Each week, students will come together with their instructor to discuss that week's reading, using the same reading list each year. This allows students to review the "Level 1" stories they read the previous year and also be introduced to new "Level 2" or "Level 3" stories.

The club employs the tadoku method, a Japanese-style reading practice that encourages students to begin with material below their level, never use a dictionary, skip words they don't understand, and move on to a different text if they are unable to understand multiple pages. An additional rule for this reading club is that students should not compete with their fellow club members, but rather strive to improve upon their own previous efforts.
