About this Course
"Shadows & Light: Gothic Literature" is a full-year, full-credit course taught by Anna Knaub, meeting Mondays from 12:45 to 1:45 pm CST. The course delves into Gothic literature, a genre known for its haunting, mysterious, and chilling stories, often set in European architectural styles. Students explore key themes, motifs, and styles, including horror, mystery, the supernatural, and psychological depth. The curriculum spans classic and modern texts, with students analyzing themes, reflecting on the genre's influence, and even writing their own Gothic short stories. The course workload consists of formal essays, presentations, creative assignments, study guides, and unit tests.
Throughout the year, students read works like "The Castle of Otranto," "Frankenstein," and "Dracula," along with select short stories and other selected works. Unique assignments avvic the Gothic themes to real-world ethics, as in "Modern Prometheus," and challenge students' creativity in designing original Gothic villains. The course pairs well with Psychology, Art, World History, and Anatomy & Physiology classes, and employs digital tools for enhanced learning experiences.
