The online course "Rhetoric I" is a full-year course that serves as the first year of a three-year high school sequence. It focuses on introducing students to the techniques of persuasive writing, starting with sentence and paragraph construction and progressing to progymnasmata exercises, thesis establishment, development, and support, and culminating in the creation of a persuasive piece. The course is designed for students who have previously completed two years of expository writing and have demonstrated proficiency in grammar and sentence construction.
The course includes a review of grammar principles, with a focus on identifying parts of speech, composing complete sentences, recognizing and utilizing common grammatical principles, and identifying and correcting grammatical errors. Students are expected to be able to identify the parts of speech, compose complete sentences, identify sentence fragments and run-on sentences, identify and proficiently use grammatical phrases, identify and correct misplaced, dangling, and squinting modifiers, and understand the proper use of commas.
