About this Course

Scholé Academy's Rhetoric 1 course is designed for high school students to study and practice persuasive writing and speaking, focusing on the art of rhetoric developed by Aristotle. Using "Rhetoric Alive! Book 1", students explore key concepts including the 3 appeals (ethos, pathos, logos), the 3 types of speech (deliberative, ceremonial, judicial), and the 5 canons of rhetoric (invention, organization, style, memory, delivery). The course encourages students to analyze renowned rhetorical works and develop their own skills through workshops and assignments, culminating in oratory presentations.

Students will write various pieces such as fables, speeches, essays, and poetry, adhering to MLA formatting guidelines. Instructed by Mrs. Shaltanis, the course aims to equip students with wisdom and eloquence for smart and persuasive communication. It is recommended that students have prior knowledge of informal fallacies, formal argument construction, and persuasive writing. Upon completion, students earn one high school credit in speech and debate, composition, or language arts.
