Refutation & Confirmation
About this Course
This online course, suitable for students in grades 7-8 (ages 12-14), is a continuation of the Chreia & Maxim Stage, focusing on Refutation & Confirmation exercises. Students learn to structure arguments for or against ideas, thoughts, or events, using a format inspired by ancient Greek rhetoric. The course teaches students to build their thought processes and communication skills through five key paragraph structures, which are foundational to the rhetorical process. The course's assessment is based on class participation, outline submissions, and final drafts.
Prerequisites include completion of the Fable, Narrative, and Chreia & Maxim Stages, and a basic understanding of English grammar. Students should be able to type basic sentences and paragraphs, with some familiarity with editing. The required texts are the Refutation & Confirmation Stage Student Guide and Teacher Guide by Jim Selby, and access to prior levels' Classical Composition Student Guides. Students will also need a USB headset microphone for clear communication.
