Reading Foundations 2: Emergent Readers

The "Get to Know Reading Foundations" course, led by instructor Angelique Chaverri, is a weekly 75-minute session designed for both children and their parents. During each meeting, the instructor introduces two to three new phonogram sounds, provides developmentally appropriate instruction in letter formation, grasp, posture, and sound discrimination, among other skills. The course includes developmental activities that parents can replicate at home, along with weekly activity lists to reinforce reading and motor skills. Parents document and reflect on their implementation of these activities, which are then discussed in class. Approximately half of the class time is dedicated to child instruction while parents observe, followed by a parent-focused session discussing activities, plans, and addressing potential learning issues.
