About this Course

The Introduction to Public Speaking course is a one-semester course that focuses on developing students' public speaking skills. Through the analysis of various readings and the completion of writing and speaking exercises, students will explore concepts and models of communication, learn how to select topics and organize ideas for a speech, and discover how to adapt a speech for different occasions and audiences. The course is skills-based, with the goal of helping each student become a confident public speaker through practice. Students can expect to present demonstrative, informational, expository, and persuasive speeches, with the possibility of an epideictic oratory speech, depending on time permitting.
