Playwriting
About this Course
This is a one-semester course designed for high school students who are interested in playwriting. Over the course of 16 weeks, students will attend a workshop where they will learn the craft and techniques of playwriting, and write a complete play. During the first half of the semester, students will be introduced to key elements of playwriting such as proper formatting, creating character for stage, writing dialogue, and incorporating other elements of theater into scripts.
During the second half of the semester, students will write, share, and provide feedback on each other's work. They will complete writing exercises to improve their dialogue and character descriptions and read both professionally written and their peers' scripts. Students will also watch plays available online and, if possible, see a play in their local area to bring feedback to class.
