New Testament Greek Level 1 | Middle Grades

This course, offered through Saint Raphael's School, focuses on teaching the Koine Greek language, the dialect used in the New Testament and the Orthodox Church's liturgies. It follows the curriculum of 'Greek for Children: Primer A' by Classical Academic Press. Students begin by mastering the Greek alphabet and its pronunciation using the modern, or received, pronunciation. The course progresses to include learning Greek grammar, parsing, classifying, and diagramming sentences, as well as memorizing Greek paradigms. It aims to develop students' English grammar understanding and build foundational vocabulary for academic disciplines such as medicine, mathematics, and theology. Additionally, the course introduces students to Orthodox hymnography and Scriptures in Greek, with students expected to memorize and recite prayers, hymns, and verses in class.

The school differentiates its Greek language courses from those of Schole Academy, as it primarily teaches Koine Greek tailored to understanding the New Testament, church fathers, and liturgical texts, using the modern Greek pronunciation. In contrast, Schole Academy teaches both Classical and Koine Greek, exposing students to a broader range of Greek literature and using a reconstructed pronunciation from the 5th century BC.
