About this Course

The Nature Sketchbook Club is a one-semester online course that combines art and the study of nature. Over the course of four semesters, students will explore different themes related to nature and learn techniques to record their observations through various media including graphite, colored pencil, and watercolor. The club meets bi-weekly, with meeting times confirmed via email at the start of each semester.

The themes for each semester are as follows: Spring 2025 - Spring Flowers, Birds, and Pollinators; Summer 2025 - Cats, Dogs, and Backyard Frogs; Fall 2025 - Pumpkins, Pinecones, and the Harvest Moon; and Spring 2026 - Fur, Feathers, and Scales. During each session, students can expect instructor demonstrations of various drawing and painting techniques, opportunities to draw and paint a variety of subjects, and discussions on artists who were inspired by nature. Students will also engage in activities such as observing and recording seasonal changes in plants and animals, and tracking atmospheric and astronomical features.
