About this Course

This one-year online course, designed for rising 7th to 9th graders, offers a comprehensive exploration of European history from the Medieval period through the Renaissance and Reformation. Students delve into the social, political, religious, scientific, economic, and technological events and figures that shaped Western civilization during this formative epoch. Accompanying this historical journey is an integrated study of medieval literature, accessible through a paired, back-to-back course option. The course is notable for its seminar-style discussions, encouraging active participation and independent learning. Students can anticipate approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours of reading per week, with additional time for projects and study.

The course emphasizes developing critical thinking and scholarship skills through dialogue, note-taking, and adhering to deadlines. While suitable for students with proficient reading and writing skills, it is challenging for its level and demands initiative and curiosity. The course contextually integrates faith organically, treating historical figures charitably while examining them from a robustly Christian perspective. Unlike its upper-school equivalent, this course does not expect the same level of maturity or prior knowledge.
