Math in Fiber Arts

About this Course
This is a one-semester online course centered around the intersection of fiber arts and mathematics. Fiber arts include activities such as yarn work, thread work, and fabric work. The course employs a "concrete to representational to abstract" instructional approach, which involves using hands-on fiber arts projects to understand abstract mathematical concepts. For instance, students begin by cutting fabric for quilting to learn about Euclid's elements and practice angle bisecting.
Throughout the four units, students will create tangible products related to various aspects of fiber arts and mathematics, culminating in a final portfolio presentation. To enroll, students must be proficient in basic arithmetic operations, solving one-step equations, and reading and responding to non-fiction texts. Additionally, students should be capable of performing basic knitting, crocheting, hand-sewing, and weaving tasks. Please note that purchasing course materials is suggested, but not required if the student already has them at home.
