About this Course
Literature & Composition 9/10 is a year-long, college-preparatory course for 9th and 10th graders. The course focuses on a variety of genres, including American and British novels, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Students will develop their analytical and critical thinking skills through the study of these texts, as well as practice their argumentation, support, and structure of analytical paragraphs and essays. This course emphasizes reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and research skills.
The course requires the purchase of seven books and basic supplies such as a binder, notebook paper, highlighters, Post-it notes, and writing utensils. Weekly homework includes vocabulary, grammar/mechanics, reading, and writing assignments. The course includes various methods of responding to literature, including thought-provoking questions, essay-writing, group assignments, online discussion boards, journaling, oral reports, in-class debates, and projects.
Honors level is offered for students who desire more of a challenge or wish to pursue a more in-depth study of literature. This level includes additional thought-provoking, creative, and analytical writing assignments and projects.
Required technology includes high-speed internet, a webcam, headset, and microphone, streaming video capabilities, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Quizzes, vocabulary and grammar, and formal and informal assessments of literature comprehension are used to evaluate students' understanding of the subject matter.
