About this Course

The online Full-year Latin III course is designed to complete the Oxford Latin Course and transition to reading upper intermediate Latin passages in their original form. Students will develop the ability to read and interpret works by Roman authors, gaining familiarity with poetry and prose, meter, and the writing idiosyncrasies of various authors. The course covers selections from Eutropius, Horace, and Ovid, and teaches students to analyze the employed rhetorical devices and understand the authors and their historical context. Students will improve their reading, writing, and listening skills in Latin, and will engage with the World-readiness Standards for Learning Languages from the ACTFL: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.

This course requires a Latin III Placement Test and prior completion of Latin II. While grammar instruction is not a prerequisite, a strong understanding of grammar rules is recommended for success in learning a new language. Use the provided placement tests in the grammar course descriptions to determine the appropriate grammar course for your student.
