About this Course

The Well-Trained Mind Academy offers a full-year course in Latin I, designed to provide students with an introduction to the language and a foundation for further study. The course emphasizes reading, understanding, and interpreting Latin through the lens of Roman culture and history. Students can expect to develop their reading, writing, and listening skills in Latin, and will be exposed to all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and hearing. The course aligns with the World-readiness Standards for Learning Languages from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), covering Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. It is important to note that this course is live and requires active participation; a delayed section is not available.

The academy recommends that students have a strong understanding of grammar rules before enrolling in Latin I and suggests that students take Grammar II or a similar course to build their grammar skills. There is no formal prerequisite for this course, but students who are comfortable with the topics covered in Grammar II are likely to have more success. Note that the academy does not offer a placement test for this course, but students can use the placement tests found in the grammar course to determine the appropriate level of grammar study.
