About this Course

Latin 1 is an introductory course offering a clear and engaging introduction to Latin language and culture, suitable for students without prior Latin instruction or those with some foundational knowledge. The curriculum covers essential grammar topics such as noun declensions, verb conjugations, and tenses, along with key parts of speech like adjectives, prepositions, and adverbs. Students will study and translate adapted Latin paragraphs from the Roman historian Livy, learning over 500 Latin vocabulary words and gaining insight into many English words derived from Latin. The course uses the award-winning "Latin Alive! Book 1" as the primary text.

This full-year course is designed to deliver one high school credit in foreign language. It is structured for independent study and requires students to commit to memorizing grammar and vocabulary components each week, alongside completion of homework assignments. This Latin 1 program employs a Classical pronunciation, but welcomes students with an Ecclesiastical pronunciation. No placement evaluation is necessary for students meeting the age/grade parameters, making it accessible for beginners.
