About this Course
"Latin 1" is an introductory Latin language course that begins with a comprehensive exploration of Latin grammar, including noun declensions, verb conjugations, tenses, and other parts of speech. Students study and translate adapted Latin paragraphs, initially by Roman historian Livy, learning over 500 Latin vocabulary words and understanding many English words derived from Latin. The course uses the award-winning "Latin Alive! Book 1" as the primary text, the first of a three-book series. The course requires independent study, memorization of grammar and vocabulary, and completion of homework assignments.
It is designed for high school students, typically meeting age/grade parameters, with no prior Latin instruction required. It is also suitable for students who have Completed some introductory Latin or studied Latin roots. The course is equivalent to one high school credit in foreign language.
