About this Course

The online course, titled LA 2, is designed for sixth-grade students with a foundational understanding of reading, grammar, and writing. It utilizes great works of children's literature to teach essential grammatical concepts in an engaging manner. Over the duration of the course, students learn to parse and diagram sentences, apply punctuation and capitalization rules, and develop competency in writing eloquent sentences, cohesive paragraphs, and effective essays through structured exercises and formal writing assignments. These include classical rhetoric exercises, narrative and expository writing, and identification of literary themes. The course also incorporates daily poetry reading and copywork and dictation exercises to enhance language proficiency.

Students typically spend around 2 hours per week on reading assignments, along with additional time for memory work, writing a discussion board post, and completing a weekly grammar exercise. The course is not introductory; students should have prior knowledge of the eight parts of speech and be able to identify basic parts of speech and sentence structures. Exceptional older students with minimal grammar background may still succeed with diligent effort.
