About this Course

Japanese II is a full-year course that builds upon the foundation laid in Japanese I, delving deeper into the language while enhancing students' communication skills. This course covers the five Cs of the World-readiness Standards for Learning Languages from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL): Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. Throughout the course, students will develop their abilities in the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By the end of the course, students should be able to navigate various situations like shopping and medical appointments through speech, write a detailed narrative using a combination of hiragana, katakana, and 60 common kanji characters, recognize and understand everyday conversational expressions, and comprehend the majority of information in texts such as emails, journal entries, and folktales.

The course does not offer a delayed section, as live interaction is crucial to learning a new language. It is recommended that students have completed Japanese I and be comfortable with the topics covered in Grammar II, although grammar instruction is not a prerequisite. A placement test is available for those wishing to enroll in Japanese II.
