About this Course

This is a summer course that offers an introduction to Japanese history, folklore, and pop culture with a focus on anime. The course is designed as a seminar and will explore the connection between anime and the real-world Japan, as well as what the animated films and series can teach us about Japanese history and culture. It's important to note that some of the materials covered in this class may contain content that some families may find objectionable, including partial non-sexual nudity, ancestor worship, major character death, neglect of children, animated gore, and Japanese perspectives on World War II. Parents are advised to consult content-warning resources, and to assist their student in selecting an appropriate film for the final project. This course is not offered during the 2024-2025 school year.
