About this Course

The online course, "Introduction to the Middle Ages", offers a comprehensive exploration of the medieval period from approximately 400 to 1500 AD. It moves beyond the typical political history, delving into the cultural, artistic, literary, and commercial aspects of the era. Students will study the historical, geographical, and chronological contexts of medieval Europe and the broader Mediterranean world, learning about significant figures and key events. The course debunks the stereotype of the "Dark Ages", instead highlighting advancements in learning, cultural development, and the architectural marvels of the time, such as the grand medieval churches.

Throughout the course, students will engage with primary texts, complete assignments such as short-answer questions, essays, map-work, and quizzes, and submit two papers. They will also participate in a student presentation, and complete a midterm and final exam. The course encourages hands-on learning through the use of images, diagrams, and other visual aids.
