About this Course

This introductory illustration course provides a comprehensive exploration of fundamental concepts and techniques in illustration. Over a semester, students will familiarize themselves with various mediums such as pen and ink, pencil, colored pencil, and watercolor. They will initially recreate works by renowned illustrators including NC Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, and Maxfield Parrish to understand and apply these techniques. Later, students will develop their own style by illustrating short stories and poems.

In the second half of the semester, students enjoy creative freedom to complete projects in their chosen medium while exploring the connection between text and image. Their final project could be an illustrated children's book, a series of poems, or a comic book story, requiring them to create detailed characters and settings. Throughout the course, students participate in class critiques and submit artist statements with their work, fostering peer collaboration and self-reflection.
