Introduction to Drawing with Grayscale | Fall

In "Introduction to Drawing," a studio art course, students will acquire the basic drawing skills essential for a strong artistic foundation. This course serves as a precursor to more advanced lessons in drawing with color and portraiture. Utilizing traditional and contemporary approaches with familiar mediums like graphite, charcoal, and conte, students will initially focus on understanding grayscale before delving into color. Throughout the course, learners will create master copies, render objects, and produce still life and observational drawings from life, fostering original ideas and themes. The curriculum also emphasizes exploration of different subjects, compositions, textures, papers, and application techniques for each medium through demonstrations, personal instruction, and exercises. Regular class critiques will encourage constructive collaboration and individual artist statements will help students articulate their creative intent and process understanding. Additionally, the course includes ongoing discussions on the role of art in history, faith, and the Church, aiming to inspire a deeper appreciation for the visual world.
