About this Course
The course, titled "Fundamentals of Painting," is designed to acquaint students with the basics of painting, with a focus on understanding and manipulating color. Over the course of the semester, students will study and recreate artworks from various styles, learning how master artists handled color, value, and brushwork. Initially, students will work with watercolor before progressing to oil and acrylic paints in the second half of the semester. The instructor will provide technical information about solvents, pigments, and painting surfaces, and offer guidance through demonstrations, personal instruction, and exercises. A significant portion of the semester will be dedicated to students working on a final project, a highly refined still-life, portrait, or landscape of their choice, fostering their understanding and application of concepts taught in class. Alongside studio work, students will engage in regular class critiques and produce artist statements, promoting art appreciation, creative self-expression, and critical thinking. The course also incorporates discussions about art's role in history, its relation to faith, and its purpose in the Church.
