About this Course

This is a full-year online course that surveys Western art from the beginning of civilization to the late medieval period. The course will explore the influence of religion, politics, and economy on painting, sculpture, and architecture during this timeframe. Students will study major works of art from each period and learn to analyze and write about them in a scholarly manner. The course will consider pieces in their original cultural context and within a historical framework that examines their impact on modern Western visual culture. This course is designed for high-school students and contains mature themes that may be unsettling for some younger or more sensitive readers. This course is not offered during the 2024-2025 school year.
