About this Course

This is a year-long online visual arts course designed for high school students in grades 9-12 who are interested in improving their drawing skills. The course consists of two semesters, HS Studio Art 1 and HS Studio Art 2, which provide sequential immersive drawing and design experiences. Students will learn fundamental skills of drawing from observation and imagination, with an emphasis on hand-eye coordination, shape and proportion, line weight, linear perspective, and value/tone. The course also covers basic drawing and design vocabulary and techniques, a variety of media and drawing surfaces, and collaborative group critique skills. Students can expect to spend 1-2 hours per week on homework assignments to practice and apply learned skills. A minimum of 75 minutes of live virtual class time per week includes guided experimentation, presentation of concepts and exemplary artworks, and opportunities for students to share their work-in-progress and receive feedback. A variety of drawing materials are required. The course is intended for serious students who enjoy drawing, have had a foundational art course, and are considering a visual art or design pathway.
