About this Course
This is a full-year online course that combines High School Academic Writing with Literature 1 (first semester) and High School Academic Writing with Literature 2 (second semester), providing a complete high school English credit. The course is also available for individual semester registration (0.5 credit each). The first semester focuses on helping students express their ideas in clear academic writing by mastering the three modes of writing: narrative, informative/explanatory, and opinion/argument. Additionally, students will study mentor texts, participate in literature discussion boards, and complete two cumulative literature projects.
The second semester focuses on mastering essay writing through instructor support during each step of the writing process. Students will receive feedback in Peer Reviews, write a personal narrative essay, an explanatory synthesis essay, and an argument essay in addition to shorter writing assignments. Moreover, students will read one novel and Book VI of The Aeneid, various short stories, poems, and nonfiction texts and complete literature discussion boards and two cumulative literature projects. The course is designed for 9th–10th graders who want to develop their voices through academic writing and build confidence in the writing process. An honors level of this course is available, where students will be challenged with creative projects and analytical assignments throughout each semester.
