About this Course

This is a year-long online course in graphic design, open to high school students. Students who complete both semesters will receive a full credit in Visual Arts/Fine Arts. The first semester, which can be taken independently, introduces students to the fundamentals of graphic design and basic art elements using Canva for Education and Adobe Photoshop CC. The second semester delves into Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Students will learn the design process, color theory, typography, and more. They will complete a series of sequential design exercises and weekly projects, including creating images for social media, event flyers, and poster designs. The course covers various subjects, such as understanding design elements and principles, using Adobe software, engaging in the creative process, and color theory.

By the end of the course, students will be able to use analog and digital tools to solve visual and textual problems, communicate more effectively, and consider the needs of a client and audience. Students are required to have high-speed internet, a webcam, a microphone, and a camera. They will also need a blank sketchbook, cheap mechanical pencils, and various art materials. The course uses Canva for Education, Adobe Photoshop CC, Illustrator, and InDesign. A monthly subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud is necessary. The course is recommended for 10th-12th grade students interested in art and design.
