About this Course

The course, funded by Novare Science & Math and taught using their General Biology textbook by Heather Ayala and Katie Rogstad, is a comprehensive investigation of life science. It begins by explaining the chemistry of life and progresses to explore cellular structures, diverse organisms, and human organ systems. Ecology and evolution are also covered, along with scientific exploration techniques and skill development. The course employs a mastery approach, with regular reviews to solidify understanding, and integrates history, language, and epistemology of science. Laboratory exercises and two projects (leaf collection and ecological survey) accompany the course, with grading based on class participation, quizzes, tests, projects, and laboratory reports. Students will earn one high school credit in laboratory science upon completion.
