About this Course

This is a French course for high school students in grades 10-12, taught by instructor Sally Barstow. The course is structured around in-depth themes and shorter units of art or literature, built around authentic materials such as blogs, infographics, videos, magazines, and news articles. Students can expect to develop and advance at their own pace, with three levels of students typically in the class - French 3 (advanced), and 4/5 (and higher). The course includes new material each year, allowing students to take it for two consecutive years.

The class is structured around a weekly face-to-face live meeting with about 3-4 hours of homework each week. Students can expect to have weekly assignments, a weekly written journal, contemporary music selections with activities to explore the lyrics, and assessments at the end of each unit. The course is not an AP course, but it follows advanced language class concepts laid out in the ACTFL proficiency guidelines. Students will have the opportunity to participate in 'Le Grand Concours', an annual test/competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.
