About this Course
This is a full-year environmental science course designed for high school students in grades 9th-12th, with possible enrollment for advanced 8th graders with instructor permission. The course covers various scientific disciplines such as biology, chemistry, geology, botany, ecology, math, toxicology, climatology, astronomy, meteorology, and physics, with an emphasis on environmental applications and real-world challenges. Students will explore the four spheres of the planet (Lithosphere, Atmosphere, Biosphere, and Hydrosphere) and their interactions with humans. The course incorporates hands-on lab work, live discussions, and various instructional methods, including textbooks, digital notebooks, videos, web links, and online labs. Assessments include quizzes, tests, lab reports, homework, and independent projects.
Required technology includes high-speed internet, sound card, microphone, streaming video capabilities, computer access, Microsoft Office or Google Suite, printer, and scanner or a phone/tablet with scanning capabilities. Students will need a scientific calculator, graph paper notebook, pen/pencils, colored pencils/markers, tape, scissors, index cards, and post-it notes. Grades are based on mastery checks (20%), assessments (20%), labs/mini-labs (25%), assignments (15%), professionalism (10%), and projects (10%). Students can expect feedback and communication through Canvas and will receive progress reports at mid-semester and end of semester.
