About this Course

This online course focuses on developing technical writing skills and critical thinking habits. In the first semester, students analyze and engage with various non-fiction works from ancient to modern authors, including Seneca, Montaigne, and Virginia Woolf. The second semester shifts to fiction and poetry, covering works such as John Steinbeck's "Chrysanthemums" and Shakespeare's sonnets. Students learn close-reading and analysis techniques, as well as effective writing skills, such as crafting thesis statements and building coherent essay structures. They produce original compositions in various genres and learn to convey their thoughts and ideas skillfully.

The course offers "Flexible Scheduling" and college credit approval (Belhaven ENG 101, 3 credits). These transcripted credits may be transferred to other colleges. The course is differentiated as "TPS College Composition" suitable for students seeking to complete their "freshman comp" college requirement in high school and "TPS Advanced Comp - Classical Style and Rhetoric" for students aiming to advance their writing for upper high school literature.
