English 4/5/6 Fantastic Worlds and Epic Tales - Speculative Fiction Lit and Comp

This online course focuses on the study of speculative fiction and its ability to provide insight into the world and ourselves. Through the analysis of various works of classic speculative fiction, including Beowulf, The Fellowship of the Ring, Alice in Wonderland, Watership Down, the Out of the Silent Planet trilogy, A Wrinkle in Time, Dune, and Life of Pi, students will explore the historical and cultural context that influenced each story. A significant writing component is included, where students will conduct background research, engage in thoughtful study and discussion, and develop original thesis statements and analytical essays based on their findings. The course emphasizes the redemptive power of speculative fiction in helping to reconcile God, man, and Creation.
