About this Course
This online course is designed to teach writing to early middle school students in a unique way. Instead of focusing on skill drills and mechanical assignments, it emphasizes the study of enjoyable writers such as Lewis, Tolkien, and L'Engle. Students analyze how these writers capture the reader's interest and how audience, purpose, and genre shape their writing content. The course includes writing assignments that are divided into manageable elements and built gradually into a finished piece of writing. Reflection activities are provided to help students identify their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth.
This course is best suited for students who are taking a separate literature course without thorough writing instruction and evaluation. It is also ideal for reluctant writers who need to build confidence or for late-starters who need to develop quickly by focusing solely on writing. However, it is not recommended for students with EFL-A Tutoring, and those who need to strengthen their grammar foundation are encouraged to take Grammar Foundations for Elementary and Middle School Writing in the summer before this course. Additionally, students can take Writing for Middle School in the summer before this course to get an additional boost in writing improvement.
