About this Course

This live online course is a one-semester English elective, specifically focused on Dystopian Fiction, for high school homeschoolers in grades 9-12. The course will be offered in the fall of 2024 and will delve into the history, characteristics, and common tropes of dystopian literature, including an analysis of the fears and anxieties that such stories reflect about future societies. The course will be led by instructor Marcy Swisher and will run from August 26, 2024 to December 1, 2024. Students can expect to participate in live class discussions once a week, read and analyze various novels and short stories, and complete mini projects and a final semester project. The course will cover novels such as "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro, "Our Missing Hearts" by Celeste Ng, and "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, as well as short selections from authors like Ray Bradbury, Ted Chiang, and Kurt Vonnegut.
