Creative Writing

This online Creative Writing course is designed for 10th-12th grade students who have a good grasp of English grammar and enjoy telling stories. It can be taken as an Intermediate or Pre-AP level English class, and could also be taken concurrently with AP English Language or Literature. The course focuses on building a diverse writing portfolio, with students completing major assignments in various genres and forms. Reading assignments accompany the writing assignments, focusing on specific elements of storytelling such as plot, characterization, conflict, narrative perspective, and dialogue. Students will have the opportunity to work through at least two drafts of each major creative project, receiving detailed teacher critiques and peer feedback.

The course structure consists of weekly homework assignments, optional live meetings, required reading, writing assignments, and in-depth website discussion questions. Students will need high-speed broadband Internet, a sound card and microphone, and streaming video capabilities. Evaluation is based on a rubric that generally bases 80% of a grade on content and 20% on clarity and style. The course requires an application, and once accepted, families will be contacted within 1-2 business days of registration. Weekly class update emails are sent to parents and students, and parents have the ability to view their child’s progress via an Observer Canvas account.
