About this Course

This online course delves into the historical and philosophical contexts of three influential works from ancient political history: Marcus Tullius Cicero's "The Republic", "The Laws", and "On Obligations", as well as Augustine's "City of God". Students will explore Cicero's ideas, which shaped the U.S. government and introduced the concept of natural law, and examine Augustine's significant impact on Western society with his Christian philosophy of history. The course, designed for grades 9-12, requires a daily time commitment of 45-60 minutes and assesses students via reading and participation, reading quizzes, exams, and essays. Prerequisites include a high school Roman history class or specific readings, and readiness for introductory philosophical discussion.
