About this Course
This online course, "Ancient Greek Civilization and The Iliad & The Odyssey," is designed for students in grades 7-12 (ages 12-18) and offers 1 high school credit in History, or 1/2 credit in History and 1/2 in Literature. It begins with an in-depth exploration of Greek civilization, from the Greeks in Crete to the Hellenistic Age, covering topics such as the development of democracy, the Persian Wars, the Golden Age, and the Peloponnesian Wars. The second half of the course is dedicated to a detailed reading and study of Homer's epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey. The workload is 1 hour per week for the first semester and increases to 2-3 hours per week in the second semester, with reading assignments and study guide questions. Assessment is based on participation, quizzes, mid-term and final exams, and an essay exam at the end of each semester.
The course is divided into two semesters, requires the texts "The Book of the Ancient Greeks" and "The Iliad & The Odyssey" in Butler's prose translation, along with student guides, and a USB headset microphone for online interaction. It is recommended that students read "Famous Men of Greece" and "The Trojan War" before starting the course, if they have little prior knowledge about the ancient world.
