About this Course

The course, intended for the second semester, assumes prior learning of foundational calligraphy principles, but includes sufficient review for new students. It will focus on four script types: copperplate, business penmanship, italic script, and gothic script, along with illumination techniques. The semester culminates in a final project where students write a complete poem, verse, or quotation in their chosen script. Throughout the quarter, students will learn project planning, paper selection, and precise measurement to enhance their skills. The course aims to improve not only students' calligraphy and handwriting but also instill confidence and artistic expression, often resulting in personalized notes and verses for others. It involves regular critiques and artist statements to foster collaboration and understanding of design concepts.
