Calligraphy | Fall

This online course offers an in-depth exploration of Western calligraphy, with a focus on enhancing students' handwriting skills and artistic expression. Starting with an overview of historical calligraphy influences from the West, Middle East, and Far East, the curriculum then dives into core techniques of copperplate calligraphy, Spencerian script, ornamental penmanship, and italic calligraphy. Throughout the course, students will engage in practical exercises, compose poems and greeting cards, and ultimately complete a final project—a fully penned poem, verse, or quotation in the style of their choice.

The learning process emphasizes hands-on studio work and group critiques, fostering peer collaboration and critical thinking. Each student is required to submit an artist statement along with the final project, encouraging reflection on their creative intent and understanding of design principles. Beyond developing calligraphy skills, the course aims to instill a sense of confidence and provide an enjoyable artistic hobby.
