Byzantine Chant Fundamentals for Children

This course, "Byzantine Chant for Children," focuses on the art of Byzantine Chant, a traditional form of liturgical music used in Orthodox Church services. It is designed for children interested in learning about and participating in this ancient musical tradition. The primary topics covered include an exploration of various modes of hymnography within the Orthodox Church and an initial introduction to Byzantine notation. To facilitate learning, the course will also introduce students to some of the "Automela," or model melodies, in Byzantine chant. The course is structured around guiding principles that emphasize the importance of dedicated practice and a supportive classroom environment, where students can freely make mistakes and improve their musical skills.
